A child’s imagination…

i was at starbucks and i had my huge rolling cart (refer to picture below) next to my chair. it was covered so it looked like a big box with small holes on each side.

suddenly, a random man creeps up to the box with his son (3 years old) and whispers, “Son, do you know what’s in there? a DRAGON!”

the son says: “a dragon?! NOOOO WAYYYY”.
dad: “YES! a DRAGON. LOOK IN THERE TO SEE”
son: (peeking through the side holes) “Daddy, I don’t see it! Are you sure a dragon’s really in there???”
dad: “Stick your face in the hole and see if it licks your nose!”
son: (Sticks face in, waiting for a dragon)
I play along and I say, “The dragon is a little shy. It’s also a bit late so it actually might be sleeping.”

(all this is happening while mother and daughter are standing/watching next to them.)

As the family is about to leave, they walk by the cart and the Dad is talking loudly to his wife.

The daughter tugs on his shirt and whispers, “Daddy!! SHHHH!! The dragon is sleeping!!! SHH!!”

Sometimes you have to throw in the towel and call that “re-occurring flaw” a character trait. Someone will love it.     -jm

Is it worth it?

Are all the long hours, low pay, minimal breaks (by choice to help students with their work), weekend work, grading, prepping, and all the emotional stress really worth it?

I realized today that… yeah, it is. This is an email from the parents of  my most challenging student.

Dear Ms. Myung,

Thank you for those encouraging words (and those pictures too) regarding S.

I am writing to let you know what a wonderful thing you are doing for S.  It is absolutely above and beyond what is expected as a teacher, and we – as well as S, she may not understand it now but she will, – appreciate your tremendous effort.  I am very touched by your concern regarding S’s slow progress, but we will continue to monitor and work with her at home.
